Elbow gives a number of conflicts he feels occur between the writer and the academic. One of the main conflicts is the audience and reasons that writers are writing for. He feels that writers are not necessarily writing for an audience but at times they are writing merely for themselves; their writing is for a personal use. However, the academic's view is that a writer is always writing for an audience. If the academic's side prevails, then the personal and the joy in the writing is gone because it is constantly up for criticism and others' use.
